"India's first official reaction to Bangladesh"

"India's first official reaction to Bangladesh"

"India has issued its first reaction regarding the situation in Bangladesh. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar made a statement in both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha. He said, 'After discussing with the authorities responsible for security, it was felt that Prime Minister Hasina decided to resign. On very short notice, she requested permission to come to India at that moment. Her aircraft sought permission to land in India. She arrived in Delhi on Monday evening.'The Indian Foreign Minister stated, 'India and Bangladesh share a very close relationship. We are concerned about the recent violence. Following the elections in January 2024, there has been significant tension, deep divisions, and polarization. The situation worsened after the student protests in June, with an increase in violence. Attacks extended to buildings and infrastructure, and disruptions affected rail and traffic systems. Protests continued into July. During this time, we repeatedly urged everyone to exercise restraint and emphasized resolving issues through dialogue.

Jaishankar stated, "We have been communicating the same message to all the political forces we are in touch with. Despite the Supreme Court's ruling, public anger has not diminished, and protests continue. The movement is centered around a single demand: Hasina must resign. On August 4, police were attacked, and violence increased. Attacks were carried out on minority businesses and temples, among other places."The Foreign Minister mentioned, "The situation in Bangladesh is still evolving. The Army Chief has stated that he is assuming responsibility. A process for forming an interim government is underway."He added, "We are maintaining contact with Indians in Bangladesh. There are a total of 19,000 Indians, including 9,000 students. Many Indian students returned to their country last month."Jaishankar also said, "Apart from Dhaka, there are consulates in Chattogram, Rajshahi, Khulna, and Sylhet. We hope that the Bangladeshi government will ensure security there. Once the situation normalizes, operations will resume normally.Jaishankar said, "We are also keeping an eye on the situation of minorities. Various groups and organizations are working to ensure their safety, which we welcome. However, we are concerned about the situation."He added, "Border guards have been specifically advised to remain vigilant. We have been in contact with the authorities in Dhaka for the past 24 hours. We seek the support of Parliament. There has always been consensus on such important foreign policy matters."All-Party MeetingAt the all-party meeting, Jaishankar stated, "India wishes to give Sheikh Hasina a few days to decide on her future course of action."Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi asked three questions. He inquired about the government's short-term and long-term plans regarding Bangladesh. Jaishankar responded that the situation in Bangladesh is changing and the government is monitoring it. Rahul's second question concerned the role of foreign powers, especially Pakistan, in Bangladesh. Jaishankar said, "The center is investigating this."Rahul asked whether the government had anticipated such changes in Bangladesh. Jaishankar replied, "The government is examining the situation."Trinamool's StatementAt the meeting, Trinamool Congress leaders Sudip Bandopadhyay and Derek O'Brien participated. Trinamool announced that the Chief Minister has already stated that she will fully cooperate with the central government on this issue. They requested that any decisions made by the central government regarding Bangladesh be communicated to the Chief Minister.Trinamool Congress has stated that West Bengal shares the longest border with Bangladesh. Any issues there could impact the state significantly. They also urged everyone to remain restrained on social media during this time.
